Outspoken rocker Billy Corgan blames TV bosses for Lana Del Rey's disastrous performance on Saturday Night Live in January (12), insisting she was rushed onto the high-profile show.
Del Rey hit the headlines earlier this year (12) after her lacklustre performance on the American show, but the Smashing Pumpkins singer is adamant the incident was an indication of how the music industry is exploiting today's young stars.
He tells Billboard, "(Artists that break through now) have grown up thinking that being famous is the goal. Not to be respected - not to be dangerous. (Once you get your record deal) you're just the fresh stripper.
"It doesn't surprise me that she crashed and burned, because she wasn't ready for it. I didn't think it was that bad."
Corgan wishes the current crop of music artists would be more like his band during its heyday in the 1990s, insisting, "I was part of a generation that changed the world - and it was taken over by poseurs."
