Funnyman Billy Connolly wept as he received the Outstanding Contribution in Television and Film award at a special career retrospective ceremony in Scotland on Monday (10Dec12).

The Gulliver's Travels actor was honoured after a 90-minute discussion about his career at the event, which was arranged for the comic to pick up his award in person as he was unable to attend a prize-giving ceremony last month (Nov12).

Connolly became visibly emotional after being presented with the honour by Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, who thanked him for inspiring a generation of comics.

The funnyman wept as he spoke about the honour of receiving the recognition in his home country, prompting the audience at the Old Fruitmarket concert hall in Glasgow to break into applause.

He said, "This is a delightful thing, especially coming from Scotland. I've been nominated for loads of things and got b**ger all (nothing)... Genuinely, to get this from Scotland I'd say it breaks my heart. It just hits me somewhere, (to get the award) where I live."
