Gospel singer Joe Ligon has died at the age of 80.
The Mighty Clouds of Joy frontman passed away on Sunday (11Dec16) in Georgia, according to Billboard.
Ligon started the quartet in the 1950s in Los Angeles and the group's first album, Steal Away To Jesus, was released in 1960.
He and his bandmates went on to win Grammy Awards in 1978 and 1979 for Best Soul Gospel Performance - Traditional, and in 1991 for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
Ligon and the group were also the first gospel act to appear on U.S. music show Soul Train and they opened for the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin. They also performed for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
