The British rockers led the much-anticipated set at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and kicked off the show with a medley of their hits including Viva La Vida and their latest single Adventure of a Lifetime, as teens from the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles played alongside them.

The colourful performance then turned to Bruno Mars, the 2014 half-time headliner, who gave a lively rendition of his hit Uptown Funk with DJ Mark Ronson. He was followed by Beyonce, who took charge of the 2013 Super Bowl show, as she and an army of female dancers took to the football field to debut her new song Formation, which she unexpectedly released on Saturday (06Feb16).

Bruno and Beyonce then joined forces for a Crazy In Love/Uptown Funk/Formation mash-up as they met in the middle of the stage in a musical face-off.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin then joined his guests to bring attention to all those who have graced the same Super Bowl stage in the past, as clips of memorable sets from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Paul MCCartney, and last year's (15) star, Katy Perry, among others were flashed up on screens around the stadium. The trio closed out the gig by singing Coldplay's Up&Up together.

Prior to hitting the stage, Martin hinted he and his bandmates would be "honouring the past" during the half-time show at a press conference, adding they were aiming to "provide a bit of fun and a great atmosphere for people to come and be together and be communal and enjoy the general experience."

Lady Gaga kicked off the anniversary football game by singing America's National Anthem to much praise, as Oscar winner and hearing-impaired actress Marlee Matlin performed the song in American Sign Language.
