Beyonce has caused controversy by darkening her face for a photo-shoot paying tribute to the African musician FELA KUTI.
BEYONCE, the acclaimed American singer, has caused controversy after she posed for a recent photo-shoot with a darkened face, reports E! Online. The spread, for the L'Officiel Paris 90th anniversary issue, sees BEYONCE wearing various African-inspired clothing as well as sporting a heavily darkened face with the help of artistic makeup. The GRAMMY AWARD winner is yet to comment on the shoot but the magazine is defending the spread, saying in a statement, "The designs are all reflective of the African influence on fashion this season. As for the artistic make-up, the inspiration came from several African rituals during which paint is used on the face. We find the images beautiful and inspiring". However, the images have been found offensive by many readers, including CHARING BALL, an African American who wrote in the Atlanta Post, "As a fan of Fela Kuti, a man who was passionate about the freedom of Blacks/Africans throughout the Diaspora, I'm not quite sure as to how blackface pays tribute to him. I'm not quite sure as to why she would agree to do a photo shoot that associates her with one of the most deeply rooted racist images in American history".
BEYONCE was recently unveiled as the headliner for this year's Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England. Her husband JAY-Z topped the bill two years ago
