Bette Midler has blasted the endless stream of characterless female pop stars in the contemporary music scene.

The veteran singer and actress is baffled by the popularity of modern women artists, because they all appear to look the same and rarely perform live.

Midler says, "It's a strange time, I don't want to say it's the dark ages for music but it's not such a great time. It's kind of hard to tell the characters apart."

And Midler is convinced young beauties choose to lip-synch to pre-recorded backing tracks because they're too frightened to perform in public.

She adds, "I just can't do that... I guess because I came up singing and dancing at the same time, to me it's not so frightening, for a lot of kids it is, for the younger ones it's scary."
