The Beaches star will take on the title role of meddling Dolly Levi, previously played by veteran actress Carol Channing, in the 2017 show, and a new report suggests she has scored a record-breaking salary package.

Midler will earn $150,000 (£100,000) per week, plus a percentage of the box office takings, merchandise money and a pay rise if the show brings in $1 million (£666,667) per week, according to editors of New York Post gossip column Page Six, who report the deal will make her the highest-paid actor in Broadway history.

The package will reportedly put Midler ahead of fellow Hollywood star Julia Roberts, who is also said to have earned $150,000 (£100,000) per week for her role in 2006 production Three Days of Rain.

Rehearsals for Hello, Dolly! begin in January, 2017 ahead of a planned opening night on 20 April, 2017. Midler last performed on the Broadway stage in 2013 one-woman play I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers.
