Ben Stiller's new comedy The Heartbreak Kid has reached the top of the UK box office chart after its opening weekend.

Ending the month-long run of Run, Fatboy, Run at number one, the Farrelly Brothers film recovered from its disappointing US opening (where it was held off the top spot by The Rock's new action movie Game Plan).

The creative duo's first romantic comedy since There's Something About Mary, The Heartbreak Kid stars Stiller as sports store owner Eddie, encouraged into marrying a girl he barely knows (a superb Malin Ackerman) by his father (Jerry Stiller) and best friend (Rob Corddry).

But when his new bride turns out to a few sandwiches short of a picnic and Eddie then meets the amazing Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), he faces a struggle between telling the truth and losing the girl of his dreams.

Opening on 409 screens, the comedy took £1.23 million in its first three days, beating new Jamie Foxx action flick The Kingdom into second place.

Run, Fatboy, Run fell to third place while Atonement also dropped two places to fourth, with just over £560,000 in takings over the weekend.

Control, the winner of the best European film prize at the Cannes Film Festival, entered the box office charts in tenth place, while other new entries included And When Did You Last See Your Father?, Daywatch and Feast of Love.
