Pop star Belinda Carlisle plans to travel more than 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometres) across India in a motorised rickshaw to raise money for charity.

The Circle in the Sand hitmaker will embark on the challenge in March (15) to raise money for Animal People Alliance (Apa), an initiative she co-founded to set up shelters for neglected animals in Asia. The centres will be run by victims of abuse who have been given training.

Carlisle says in a YouTube.com video, "I'm doing a rickshaw ride in India in March from Kolkata to Udaipur... So why not make a donation in somebody's name this holiday season - that person who is impossible to buy for."

Two other people will be travelling with Carlisle in the three-wheeled vehicle during the 1,135 mile (1,827 kilometres) trek.

Carlisle has created a fundraising page for the challenge and hopes to raise $25,000 (£16,000) in donations.
