The gnome joined cardboard cutouts and waxworks of more than 60 public figures on the famous album cover, which was created by Sir Peter Blake in 1967.

Following the photoshoot, the assistant to photographer Michael Cooper was given the gnome as a souvenir by the band, who scrawled their signatures on the back.

It is expected to fetch $27,000 when it goes up for sale at Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills, California on 18 April (15).

Dean Harmeyer, from the auction house, says,"This is a true rarity and a cornerstone piece of any Beatles collection."
