Bauhaus' Peter Murphy Charged With Dangerous Driving After L.A. Incident

Peter Murphy Bauhaus

It’s not looking good for Bauhaus front man after the British singer was arrested in Los Angeles in the Glendale region for suspected DUI. Murphy was spotted driving through the Los Angeles suburb late on Saturday night (March 16, 2013) and was driving erratically before he crashed his car into the rear of another vehicle.

According to The Guardian, Murphy combined this incident by simply driving after the incident, though he was eventually apprehended after a witness trailed his car further into Los Angeles, apparently "afraid [Murphy] would kill someone with his driving", according to the police.

And it gets even worse for Murphy. Police arrived at the scene and claim to have found a small plastic bag, possibly full of methamphetamine, which he was trying to discard. Apparently the 55-year-old was "very confused” and was struggling to give coherent answers to the police. The reason he gave was that he was jet-lagged from a recent flight, while he also denied being drunk. However he did state he was on prescription medication for depression. He’s been charged with possession of methamphetamine, felony hit-and-run, and suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs. As of Monday, he had not yet posted bail, set at $500,000 (£330,566). Bauhaus were a critically acclaimed post-punk industrial band who had their heyday in the early 1980’s.

Peter Murphy, the lead singer with British rock band Bauhaus, is due in court in Los Angeles following his arrest on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run and drug possession. Murphy, 55, was arrested on Saturday (March 16, 2013) and held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The baritone voiced singer, originally from Northampton, England, allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in Glendale and fled the scene, despite injuring the driver. A witness followed Murphy and blocked his vehicle until police arrived. A team dispatched to the scene detained Murphy, booking him on suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony hit-and-run and possessing methamphetamine.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Murphy denies drinking alcohol on Saturday and says he had only taken his prescription pills for depression. The singer - who now lives Turkey - told officers he was jet-lagged from his recent flight to the U.S. The arresting officers noted that Murphy appeared to be "very confused" and had difficulty recalling the day and time.
