U.S. President Barack Obama is leading the tributes to Elizabeth Edwards after she lost her battle with breast cancer on Tuesday (07Dec10).
The 61-year-old wife of former U.S. Vice President candidate John Edwards passed away at her home in North Carolina following a six-year fight with the disease.
The activist and author supported her husband's bid while undergoing cancer treatment, but the couple separated in January (10) after it emerged he allegedly had an affair in 2006.
Leading American politicians have praised Edwards' strength of spirit, while Hollywood stars have also mourned her death.
A statement from Obama reads, "In her life, Elizabeth Edwards knew tragedy and pain. Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up. But through all that she endured, Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration."
Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife, Maria Shriver, also honoured her pal: "Elizabeth was a mighty warrior, and I've long admired her courage, her compassion and her personal quest for truth. She was a public servant, a dedicated mother, a tireless advocate and a loyal friend... I hope her children know their mother was an inspiration to women everywhere - a truly great woman."
Socialite Paris Hilton has also paid her respects on her Twitter.com page, writing: "So sad to hear about Elizabeth Edwards. My heart breaks for her children. She was truly a woman of such class and grace. God rest her soul."
Actress Alyssa Milano 'Tweeted': "Rest in peace, Elizabeth Edwards."
