Avatar, An Educaton, The Hurt Locker, Precious, and Up in the Air were nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for best picture at its annual BAFTA awards, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars. Unlike some previous years, no single film dominated the awards list. Avatar, Hurt, and Education received the most nominations, eight, while the sci-fi thriller District 9 received seven. The nominations appeared particularly auspicious for Avatar, which was ignored by many critics groups and industry associations in their annual awards presentations last month. The awards are scheduled to be presented at a ceremony an the Royal Opera House in London on Feb. 21, two weeks before the Oscars on March 5.
