The stars have been selected by officials at the Smithsonian magazine, the cultural and historical publication of the global museum group, to be recognised at their annual end-of-year celebration, which takes place on 8 December (16).

Lynch will be feted in the Education field for promoting the benefits of transcendental meditation in U.S. schools, while Ansari will be applauded in the Performing Arts category for his "fresh and innovative" TV show Master of None.

Dance stars Ok Go are also among the honourees, landing the Visual Arts accolade for their creative Upside Down & Inside Out promo, which was the first video shot entirely in zero gravity.

Previous American Ingenuity Awards winners include funnymen Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, Hamilton creator and former Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda, and musicians Rosanne Cash, and T. Bone Burnett.
