The Baby singer is executive producing and starring in Mothers & Daughters, which will also feature Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone, Courteney Cox, Christina Ricci, Mira Sorvino, and Selma Blair.

The film marks her debut as a producer, and she tells WENN she was thrilled to be a part of the process: "I have such a close relationship with my mom, who is also my manager... so I really related to this project."

Mothers & Daughters features interwoven stories about what it means to be a mum, centred around a busy single rock photographer who discovers she is pregnant while coming to terms with her relationship with her estranged mother.

And the film project, which will hit cinemas two days before America's Mother's Day holiday on 8 May (16), appears to have kickstarted the R&B singer's music career in a big way.

Ashanti is currently recording new music for her next album, and she's hitting the road for a co-headlining tour with old pal Ja Rule - something the rapper hinted at earlier this year (16).

The good news comes after a stalker hell for the singer.

Devar Hurd, who was convicted of stalking Ashanti, was handed prison time and slapped with a five-year restraining order after he was found guilty of felony stalking in a New York court on 18 March (16), five months after another jury was left deadlocked on the same charge, despite convicting him of nine other counts, including criminal contempt and harassment.

The charges all related to a 2013 arrest, after Hurd was accused of bombarding the R&B singer with lewd text and Twitter messages. The case had previously gone to trial in 2014, but ended in a mistrial after one of the jurors fell ill.
