OSCAR-winning American actor Art Carney has died, aged 85.

Carney was well-known for his role as sewer worker Ed Norton in 1950's American TV show THE HONEYMOONERS - for which he earned three EMMYS - and 1975 movie HARRY AND TONTO, for which he picked up his Best Actor ACADEMY AWARD.

However, Carney had to struggle against his demons too - his alcoholism led him to drop out of the role of FELIX UNGER in the Broadway production of THE ODD COUPLE in 1960, which he originated, and he then spent six months in a sanatorium.

In his later years, Carney appeared in mainstream movies such as THE LAST ACTION HERO and MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN.

Carney died on Sunday (09NOV03) in Connecticut and leaves three children.
