Arnold Schwarzenegger's plans to terminate thousands of stray animals has been met with opposition from pet lovers in America.

The Governor of California, 56, has encountered a storm of protest from animal lovers - after he had hoped to save $18 million (GBP10 million) by slaughtering stray dogs and cats in animal shelters.

The TERMINATOR star had asked the California legislature to repeal a 1998 law that requires the shelters to hold animals up to six days before destroying it.

BARBARA O'CONNOR, a doctor at California State University, says, "Pet owners in America will find this reprehensible. Cats and dogs are like mom and apple pie.

"Most people prefer them to other people."
