The Modern Family star has been estranged from her mother, Crystal Workman, for several years and she celebrated her emancipation last year (15).

Ariel has repeatedly accused her mother of being an overbearing stage parent and also alleged she was abusive, but Workman is speaking out to dismiss her claims, insisting she has never physically hurt her daughter - even though she insists the teen actress can't say the same.

"I have been abused physically and I believe all of this is emotional abuse," she tells U.S. news show Inside Edition. "Ariel should ask herself, 'Has Ariel ever raised her hand to her mother? Has Ariel ever done anything that she's ashamed of to her mother?' Instead of thanking me, she continues to berate me, disrespect, dishonor me and that hurts as a mother."

Ariel opened up about her difficult home life in March (16) and she also revealed she hasn't spoken to her mum in three -and-a-half years.

"It wasn't a supportive loving home," she told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America. "I had a really tough time. This is what she wanted me to do and she pushed very hard for that. It was in the forefront of her mind instead of giving me what I wanted or needed."

However, Crystal is adamant she didn't push her daughter into anything she didn't want.

"I didn't start this battle," she continues. "I haven't seen her in three and a half years. I don't know why she is bringing this up. I think Ariel is conjuring up stories to help her career at my expense and I feel as a parent I am being bullied."

"She was begging me, 'I want to be on TV'," she adds. "She would say, 'I can do better than your clients.' She has never been pushed into the industry. Ariel has wanted to be in the industry since she was five-years-old."

Crystal also criticised her daughter for undergoing breast reduction surgery last year (15). While the 18-year-old is overjoyed with the results, Crystal doesn't find the procedure appropriate.

"I don't think anyone at that age should be cutting into their breasts," she says. "I am surprised she did it so young and that the doctor did it for her so young. I'm sorry, I just think this is inappropriate. She should never be embarrassed of her scars but she shouldn't be flaunting them."

Despite their estrangement, Crystal is hoping they can one day reconcile and go to counselling.

Ariel has not commented on her mother's interview, and her representative insists she is in "a happy and great place". However, she addressed "challenges" in her life in a telling post on Instagram.com on Wednesday (28Apr16).

"To all those who have gone through challenges & someone has tried to tear you apart, even when it's someone you love, keep trusting in your own heart," she wrote. "Build from your heart & know that every obstacle life hands you is an opportunity to show yourself how strong you truly are. Happy Wednesday."
