'Are You Being Served?' Writer Jeremy Lloyd Passes Away At 84

Jeremy Lloyd, the writing talent behind many beloved British sitcoms such as ‘Are You Being Served?’ and ‘’Allo ‘Allo’, has died at the age of 84. He was taken to hospital on Monday evening with pneumonia and died early on Tuesday morning.

Lloyd’s agent Alexandra Cann described him as “a great wit and always a mass of original ideas. He had a wonderfully original mind and will be greatly missed.”

Actress Vicki Michelle, who played Yvette Carte-Blanche in ‘‘Allo ‘Allo’, took to Twitter to commemorate the writer: “So sad to hear of Jeremy Lloyd’s passing. Such a wonderful talent, mentor & friend. A complete joy to work with. RIP Jeremy I’ll miss you xx.”

Frank Thornton, Are You Being Served? Actor Dies Aged 92

The actor Frank Thornton has died, at the age of 92. Thornton, best known for his role in Are You Being Served passed away “peacefully in his sleep,” according to BBC News. He played Captain Peacock in the BBC comedy and will be fondly remembered by many. His agent, David Daly, said “I have been Frank's agent since 1986 and he has been the most wonderful client as well as being a great friend. He will be sorely missed.” He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beryl, their daughter Jane and three grandchildren.

Are You Being Served? was a hugely popular comedy, airing on the BBC between 1972 and 1985. Set in a department store, the show also starred Mlly Sugden, John Inman and Wendy Richards. Thornton’s character was a store walker who would often be seen boasting about his military experience and being condescending to junior store staff. His role was also reprised for the spin-off show Grace and Favour, in 1992.

As well as his popular role in Are You Being Served? Thornton also appeared o a number of episodes of Steptoe and Son – in fact, he was the most frequently occurring actor in the show other than the two lead actors Harry H Corbett and Wilfrid Brambell. Later in life, he also appeared in ITV’s soap Emmerdale. His film credits include Carry on Screaming!, Some Will Some Won’t, Gosford Park and No Sex Please, We’re British.
