The star took to the stage at the London ceremony to accept the group's Best British Album prize, but he left guests baffled by making a rambling speech in which he declared, "Rock and roll just won't go away".
The incident sparked speculation Turner was drunk and he later claimed he had suffered a bout of nerves on the night, but now he has spoken out to stand by his words and urge young musicians to keep guitar music alive.
Turner tells NME magazine, "It was just about presenting an option that people may or may not know exists. It occurred to me that in that room, or certainly watching it on Tv, were people who'd never heard the term 'rock 'n' roll'... and the idea that you can start a band with your mates and eventually go on to move people or whatever you wanna call it.
"Using rock 'n' roll as the most direct way of illustrating that was kinda what I was trying to do - and also to try and be a bit entertaining at the same time."
