Kate Garraway has been awarded "substantial" libel damages after the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror claimed she had been adulterous.

The newspaper published implying the GMTV presenter had been involved in an affair with Anton Du Beke, her dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing.

But after the 39-year-old took action against publishing group MGN Limited over the two articles published in February, Garraway has been award a six-figure sum in damages and costs.

Garraway's solicitor Rachel Atkins told the judge the articles entitled 'Kate + Anton… A Late Tango' and 'Strictly Friends' alleged that her client was cheating on her husband, former Labour spin doctor Derek Draper, and having an affair with Du Beke.

"Contrary to the allegations, the claimant and her husband are and were as faithful, happy and in love at the time of the publication as they had ever been," Ms Atkins went on.

"The plain truth was that the claimant and Anton Du Beke became friends during Strictly Come Dancing. Since then they often worked and spent time together."

Speaking after today's judgement, Garraway said: "The way my friendship with Anton was twisted into something sordid was terribly unfair and upsetting.

"No-one likes to take legal action against a newspaper but I could see no alternative."

She added: "The accusations threatened to cast a shadow over the wonderful time I had on Strictly Come Dancing but now I can feel good about it again."
