Moviemaker Antoine Fuqua is glad Jake Gyllenhaal's schedule forced him to walk away from gritty drama Prisoners, because he wasn't looking forward to shooting the kidnap drama.

The Training Day director was wrestling with his decision to make the film when his leading man had to put the project on hold to star in a play.

Fuqua tells Wenn, "I prepped for it and actually brought up Jake Gyllenhaal for the lead at the time. The timing was wrong because he was doing a play... but I didn't really want to make that film.

"I was struggling with the movie because I have children and it was the idea of kids being abducted and the concept of that. I couldn't think of making that film for a year in my life and dealing with that idea and being a father."

Denis Villeneuve stepped in to replace the director.
