SIR Anthony Hopkins' dreams of playing revered novelist Ernest Hemingway on the big screen have been dashed - the film won't happen.

Movie-maker Roger Donaldson had tentatively signed Hopkins to play the writer in PAPA, and recently visited Hemingway's Havana, Cuba home and met Cuban leader Fidel Castro to research the project - but now he insists the film won't go ahead.

The COCKTAIL director says, "There's nothing happening there. It was just an idea - and I don't think it's going to happen now."
