The actress admits she couldn't open up about her folks' split when she was 15 without it becoming like "a police report", and so she ditched that portion of her life in Scrappy Little Nobody.

But the Up in the Air star insists it had nothing to do with the fact that part of her teens was too dark and painful for her to write about.

"It was one of the many things I wanted to write about, but it just didn't end up jelling," she tells Playboy, adding her parents were "so civil and respectful throughout the process".

"It made me a poster child for divorce," she adds. "If they'd stayed together and been unhappy, it would have messed up my understanding of what marriage should look like."
