Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have made a name for themselves as pretty left-of centre, liberal-minded folk but if you take a little browse through the family tree, it's hard to understand where their attitudes have come from. Not only did Brad Pitt's mother cause some embarrassment for her son by publicly describing President Barack Obama as "a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage" but now Angelina Jolie's father, Jon Voight, has waded into the mix to show his support for Mrs Pitt.
Speaking to Fox News, the actor said "good for her" when he was asked about Jane Pitt's decision to express her views. Voight is a known Conservative, unlike Brad and Angelina. Although the couple have now expressed their plans to get married, they once stated that they refused to marry in the US until it was legal for everyone to do so - including same sex couples. The response to Jane's letter has perhaps been unnecessarily harsh; it was intended as a plea for tolerance, The Hollywood Reporter explains. She had written the letter as a response to another correspondent, who argued that Christians should not vote for Mitt Romney because he's a Mormon. The upshot, however, was that she wound up being portrayed as a homophobe.
Brad's brother Doug defended his mother on NBC earlier this week, saying "I think moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world. So why would our family be any different? . The bad thing is when it turns to venom and negativity, and we don't have that in our family. It's open discussion. We can learn from each other, and if anything, it solidifies your point. Or maybe you learn something."
