The Spider-Man star, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his last stage gig in Broadway's Death of a Salesman in 2012, will tackle the lead role of Prior Walter, a gay man who is visited by an angel after his lover leaves him upon learning of his AIDS diagnosis.

Stephen Spinella originated the part on Broadway in the early 1990s and Justin Kirk was cast as Prior in Mike Nichols' acclaimed TV movie adaptation in 2003.

Angels in America will debut at the London venue in May, 2017.

It's not the only high-profile National Theatre casting making headlines - Downton Abbey's Elizabeth MCGovern has signed up to appear in Alexi Kaye Campbell's play Sunset At The Villa Thalia in June (16), while Extras star Tamsin Greig will give William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night a twist by portraying a female version of Malvolio, renamed Malvolia, in February, 2017. Ralph Fiennes will also star in another Shakespeare production of Antony and Cleopatra in 2018.
