Rising star Amy Winehouse has launched a scathing attack on fellow jazz singer Katie Melua, branding the curly-haired teen "s**t".

The STRONGER THAN ME hitmaker, 20, slammed 19-year-old Melua backstage at the BBC JAZZ AWARDS in London on Wednesday (28JUL04).

Ironically, both singers were students at the BRIT PERFORMING ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL in Croydon, south of the capital, although it is unknown if they were classmates.

Winehouse said, "I pride myself in being different. Jazz is all about pushing the boundaries and experimenting. I have never listened to Katie's music but is all written for her and she is s**t."

A majority of the tunes of Melua's number one debut album CALL OFF THE SEARCH were written by her manager MIKE BATT and songwriter John Mayall.

Melua responds, "I have never met Amy. I don't know why she would say these things about me. Maybe she knows things about me that I don't. I don't know her music or listen to her music. Her voice is stunning."
