Auditions for American Idol in Memphis, Tennessee, have been cancelled out of respect for locals trying to cope in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The auditions were to be held on Monday (05SEP05), but the show's producers feel it will be disrespectful to proceed.

A spokesman for the reality TV talent contest says, "The city of Memphis has taken on the responsibility of taking in tens of thousands of refugees from Hurricane Katrina, and out of respect for the city's citizens, their public services, and the need to focus public safety efforts on the victims, this decision was made."

Producers plan to resume auditions in Tennessee next season.
