The American Idol finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez duked it out at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the show's live final on Tuesday night (May 22, 2012), with the singer-songwriter from Georgia all but securing this year's title.

It would now be a huge shock should 16-year-old Sanchez scoop the prize on tonight's results show, given that her "winning single" 'Change Nothing' fell a little flat with the live audience, as well as the judges. In contrast, Phillips' song 'Home' appeared tailor-made for the 21-year-old and the rosy ballad is certain to be a sure-fire hit with the songwriter's female fans at least. He earned the evening's only standing ovation from the judges - certainly a good sign - with Randy Jackson commented, "I loved the song, I loved you, I loved the production, I loved the marching band, everything about that was perfect! I loved it!" Jennifer Lopez agreed, gushing, "There's nothing on the radio that sounds like that", while Steven Tyler said, "You were perfect tonight, and I think you are the man". The judges certainly made it clear who they want to see crowned American Idol champ tonight.

As mentioned, Sanchez' winning single performance didn't go down particularly well - which can't be a good - and Tyler suggested it wasn't "the proper song" for her to sing. Sanchez herself told Ryan Seacrest she wasn't enamoured with the tune, saying, "I did want to do [something more] urban, but like, this is the finale, and, like, I was trying to pick a winning song, something more that shows my voice".
