Last week, Fox had only three shows listed in Nielsen's top twenty, its two American Idol episodes at No. 1 & No. 2, and a repeat of Touch at No. 19. Of the four major networks, it ranked third among total adults, separated from last-place NBC by fewer than a half-million viewers. Nevertheless, it was the No. 1 network among the 18-49 age group, the demographic that advertisers prefer, placing seven shows in the top twenty of that demo. A year ago, however, it was far stronger, averaging 4.21 million viewers in the 18-49 age group during the comparable week versus 2.82 million last week. It was also the only network to lose total adult viewers compared with last year, plunging a whopping 29 percent. By contrast ABC's audience was up 12 percent and CBS's 3 percent, while NBC's remained flat. CBS remained the most-watched network with a 5.1 rating and a 9 share. ABC placed second with a 4.4/7, followed by Fox with a 3.9/7, just ahead of NBC with a 3.5/6. Among the evening newscasts, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams remained in the lead with an average 8.10 million viewers. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer followed with 7.30 million, followed by the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley with 5.88 million viewers.
