Former American Idol star Crystal Bowersox is set to make her Broadway debut as Patsy Cline in an upcoming musical based on the country legend's life.

Bowersox will portray the Walkin' After Midnight hitmaker in Ted Swindley's play Always... Patsy Cline, which is due to begin previews in July (13) - marking the 50th anniversary of her death.

The singer/songwriter admits she's still pinching herself about the role of a lifetime, revealing, "I've got big boots to fill. That was an incredible day that (I learned) they wanted me to play Patsy. I'm still coming to terms with it. I think I was doing cartwheels around the house, or something.

"It's going to be a challenge for sure, as I've never done theatre. I'm looking forward to the challenge, and hopefully I will do Patsy Cline justice."

The production will feature over 25 of Cline's most popular songs, including I Fall To Pieces and Crazy, and it will also tell the true story of her lifelong friendship with devoted fan Louise Seger, who will be played by Smallville actress Annette O'Toole.

Tony Award winner John Rando is set to direct.

Cline died in a plane crash in 1963 at the age of 30.
