It seems American Idol has also developed Adele-mania, with two of the contestants from the Top 12 female semi-finalists opting to sing the same song. It was a strange tactic, given Elise Testone and Jen Hirsh would inevitably be compared to each other following the rendition, but the duo sang equally convincing versions of the track.
It was 25-year-old Californian Hirsh who was the first to perform 'One and Only', leading judge Randy Jackson to claim she was "one of the greatest singers in the competition this year". Meanwhile, Testone closed the show with her rendition of the same song, again leading Jackson to say she had has "one of the best voices in the competition". Jennifer Lopez echoed the praise, telling the 28-year-old teacher from Charleston, "For me, you're one of the best singers, maybe the best singer here". As well as the Adele covers, plenty of other contestants received high praise from the judges, with 26-year-old DJ Erika Van Pelt of Rhode Island offering an excellent rendition of Heart's 'What's About Love'. Elsewhere, Texan Hollie Cavanaugh sang Christina Aguilera's 'Reflection', and Jessica Sanchez was lauded for 'Love You I Do' from the 'Dreamgirls' soundtrack.
