The Danish Girl star will pick up the role from Angelina Jolie and Rhona Mitra after agreeing to lead the cast in director Roar Uthaug's revamp.

Jolie starred in the two previous Tomb Raider movies - 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life - and Mitra appeared as the live action model for Lara Croft in Eidos Interactive's Tomb Raider video game series.

Vikander reportedly beat out Star Wars: Episode VIII star Daisy Ridley for the Croft role.

The Wave director Uthaug recently revealed his Tomb Raider will be more human than Jolie's action-woman portrayal, stating, "I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen."

Vikander, who also impressed as a robot in last year's (15) acclaimed Ex MAChina, is really making waves as an action star - the actress also features in the latest Jason Bourne film, opposite Matt Damon.
