American writer ED McBAIN died on Wednesday (06JUL05) following a battle with throat cancer. He was 78.

McBain sold more than 100 million copies of his crime novels, including the 87th PRECINCT series, and also wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1963 thriller The Birds.

McBain, who was born SALVATORE LOMBINO, launched his crime-writing career in 1956 with COP HATER and was honoured with the Grand Master Award by the Mystery Writers Of America Society in 1986.
