The former Nickelodeon star, 18, and newcomer Themo Melikidze will play the Tsarnaev brothers, who masterminded a terrorist attack during the marathon in Boston, Massachusetts in 2013. Three people were killed and more than 260 were left injured in the explosions.

Older brother Tamerlan was killed in the subsequent manhunt, while Dzhokhar was captured. He was found guilty of all 30 charges related to the attack, and was sentenced to death in May, 2015.

Alex is best known for playing opposite his brother, Paper Towns' Nat Wolff, in Nickelodeon show in The Naked Brothers Band between 2007 and 2009. He was also in TV show In Treatment, and plays in a band with his brother.

Mark Wahlberg, a Boston native, is producing and starring in Patriots' Day, just one of three movies being made about the 2013 tragedy. Jake Gyllenhaal is also working on Stronger, which focuses on survivor Jeff Bauman, while Casey Affleck is reportedly set to lead another production called Boston Strong.

In Patriots' Day, which is based on the account of Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, Mark will play Boston Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders, a composite of two officers key to the investigation and subsequent manhunt for the terrorists.

John Goodman plays Edward Davis, while Kevin Bacon will portray FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers and J.K. Simmons has been cast as Watertown Police Department Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, who was engaged in a firefight (prolonged exchange of bullets) with the brothers. Michelle Monaghan rounds out the cast as Walhberg's wife.

Filming began in Massachusetts last week (ends03Apr16). The movie, directed by Lone Survivor's Peter Berg, is scheduled for limited U.S. release in December (16) ahead of a wide 2017 release.
