Lewis passed away of complications from open heart surgery on 4 April (15) in Edison, New Jersey, according to the New York Times.

He was best known for his Broadway play Chinese Coffee, which starred Al Pacino in 1992.

The Scarface star reprised the role the following year and directed and starred in a film adaptation in 2000.

Lewis also wrote the movie industry comedy Gross Points.

His acting credits include his Broadway debut in Incident at Vichy in 1964 and in Pacino's feature directorial debut, Looking for Richard.
