Office Space Review

Excellent
Give Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge enough rope, and he may just hang himself. In his first live-action outing, Judge does a fair job at making sick jokes about corporate America, he just doesn't seem to make enough of them, ultimately leaving Office Space a bit flat.

Straight from Swingers, Ron Livingston makes a surprisingly good Everyman as Peter, so sick of his job ("In a week, I'd say I do 15 minutes of real work.") that he goes to a hypnotherapist for relaxation treatment. Of course (and the trailer doesn't tell you this), the therapist dies while Peter is under, leaving him in an ultra-relaxed state without a care in the world. (What's particularly funny is that Office Space was shot in high-tech ghetto north of my old hometown of Austin, Texas, where the "go-getter" attitude is severely frowned-upon.)

Chutney Popcorn Review

Good
Just the other day I was remarking, "Why aren't there more Indian lesbian surrogate mother comedies!?" Thank God, my prayers are answered with Chutney Popcorn, a curious picture that defies categorization... er, except I think that's what I just did.

An obviously self-indulgent indie project from Nisha Ganatra, who directs, produces, writes, and stars, our heroine Reena finds herself acting as a surrogate mother for her infertile older sister, who is married to a bit of a schlub of a white guy. But what will Reena's girlfriend Lisa (Hennessy) think? You can probably fill in the rest of the movie on your own.

Office Space Review

Good

Mike Judge has an abstruse, shadowy, pessimistic but frightfullyobservant sense of humor.

The scruffy animator and humor-askewed creator of "Beavisand Butthead" and "King of the Hill," he has a style tohis comedy that just drips irony from every punch line. Judge, it seems, sees civilization crumbling around him and thinks to himself, "Thisif funny stuff."

It's this corkscrew point of view that made "Beavisand Butthead" a perceptive satire of teenage apathy, even though onthe surface it appealed only to the gene pool bottom feeders that the showwas about. It's also the reason "Office Space," Judge's firstlive-action feature as a writer and director, is such a sharp satire ofthe stale, numbing existence of the American office drone.

The Guru Review

OK

Making fun of its own light comedy clichés (like its must- stop- the- girl- from- marrying- the- wrong- guy finale) could have added an extra layer of laughs to a movie like "The Guru" -- if it wasn't entirely dependent on those same clichés to drive its plot.

Amiable, boy-faced Indian actor Jimi Mistry (seen in the imports "East is East" and "The Mystic Masseur") plays an enthusiastic immigrant named Ramu Gupta who comes to America with wide-eyed dreams of stardom, born of his jones for the movie musical "Grease." But through a series of screwball misunderstandings, he's soon being celebrated by Manhattan's trendy elite as "the Guru of Sex" -- a spiritual healer who tells the people what they want to hear: nookie makes good therapy.

Ramu gets all the sexual philosophy that's making him famous (he's soon appearing on "Sally Jesse Raphael") from a good-hearted porno actress (Heather Graham) he met when he mistakenly wandered into the wrong kind of audition. But in one of those ham-fisted movie mix-ups that could be corrected with a single line of dialogue, she thinks she's advising him on how to overcome performance anxiety and become an X-rated stud, and therefore shares her innermost sexual secrets.
