Bollywood queen Aishwarya Rai's international film debut BRIDE AND PREJUDICE has failed to excite the critics and fans in her native India.
Director Gurinder Chadha's Bollywood adaptation of JANE AUSTEN's classic novel Pride And Prejudice, which is shot in both Hindi and English, opened across Indian and Britain last weekend (08-10OCT04).
The $5 million (GBP2.7 million) film's opening day in Bombay last Friday (08OCT04) only managed a 60 to 70 per cent capacity, although that rose to 95 per cent on Sunday (10OCT04).
Film analyst and BOX OFFICE magazine publisher INDU MIRANI remarks, "I think the film is a commercial flop."
Another movie expert and FILM INFORMATION trade magazine publisher KOMAL NAHATA says, "The script of the film has not gone down well with the masses.
"The script is outdated and does not suit urban India which has changed drastically in the last 14 years. The new Indian woman has changed into a confident and independent person who does not relate with the heroine in the script.
"Women, the main audience, have failed to identify with the movie."
The majority of film critics in India have given the movie a three-star rating and focused their criticism on Rai and her on-screen love interest Martin Henderson.15/10/2004 17:13
