Introducing: Air Traffic Controller Now On The UK's Radar

Air Traffic Controller

How often do you see a band name that just makes sense? Not often these days, but newly emerging Boston band Air Traffic Controller like to keep things nice and simple.

Lead vocalist Dave Munro set up the band after returning from his deployment in the US Navy as, well, an air traffic controller. He'd previously sent a few short demos back home to Boston and was pleasantly surprised to find that he'd grown a small fanbase. Thus, he enlisted a few instrumentalists - including lead guitarist Steve Scott, drummer Richie Munro, bassist Casey Sullivan and viola player Kiara Perico - and embarked on his exciting musical journey. Their first album, 'The One', was released in the US in 2009 to much acclaim, landing them several awards and nominations including a nomination for 'Best Break-Out Artist' at the MTV Video Music Awards. Now, after a successful fundraiser on Kickstarter, they introduce themselves to the UK with their upcoming second album 'Nordo'.

Air Traffic Controller - Video Interview

Interview with Air Traffic Controller November 2013

We interviewed Boston band Air Traffic Controller as they make their debut in the UK with their second album 'Nordo' featuring their highly acclaimed single 'Hurry Hurry'. They had a lot to say about the new record, what they get up to on the road and the skills they would love to have - even their cat Simon has something to say!

''Nordo' is an Air Traffic Controller term short for 'no radio'', says lead singer Dave Munro. 'What they mean by 'no radio' is an airplane that has lost its radio and can no longer communicate with the air traffic controllers.' Apart from the usual mad hijinks any band might get up to on the road, lead guitarist Steve Scott reveals it's always a little difficult to switch off. 'We kinda like to practice and write new songs while we're on tour', he says. When asked what skill they would most like to have, bassist Casey Sullivan had some pretty deep thoughts, confessing, 'I wanna learn every language... I just feel like I would learn so much more about the world.'

Air Traffic Controller - Hurry Hurry [Acoustic]

New on the UK scene, Boston band Air Traffic Controller perform an acoustic version of their single 'Hurry Hurry' taken from their upcoming album 'Nordo' due out in early 2014 on their own label, Sugarpop Records.

Lead singer Dave Munro, lead guitarist Steve Scott and bassist Casey Sullivan perform the track in a homely recording space with Dave and Casey on acoustic guitars and Steve on an electric mandolin. There's a raw ease to the intimate performance with a perfect sense of unity between the three musicians. The wonderfully up-tempo song itself, as an unpolished acoustic version, gives a more genuinely uplifting vibe, with the modern folk twangs and country vocal hiccups adding a sense of pure fun. It's the kind of song that's just there to brighten up your day.

The band have had prominent success in the US for a few years now after the release of their debut album 'The One', but their entrance to the UK scene with 'Nordo' promises many more major successes - particularly as it was the public that made it happen through ATC's Kickstarter album project. With several awards and nominations under their belt as well as much radio play, things are looking bright for this Boston indie group.
