As many predicted, Adele scooped the award for Best Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday (21 February 2012). The award was presented by Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue.
The '21' singer - who is the first female artist to sell more than 3 million records in the UK in one year - beat stiff competition from Laura Marling, Jessie J, Kate Bush and Florence Welch. Arriving on stage to collect her award, the Londoner told the crowd, "Thanks to my record company for letting me be the artist I wanted to be". It was the first win for Adele, who is also expected to pick up awards for Best British Album and Best British Single. Elsewhere at the Brit Awards, American singer Bruno Mars scooped the gong for Best International Award. Bruno, who was the biggest selling male artist in the world last year, told the crowd at the O2, "Guys, I want to thank everyone in the UK who bought my records and came to my shows. I want to thank my record company who supported me and made me this international man. Fans, I love you, I'll be back soon with my second album".
Adele is also set to perform at the Brits, alongside Rihanna and Noel Gallagher. British rockers Blur are set to close the show, after picking up the contribution to music award.
