Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore proved to be a hit with their romantic comedy 50 FIRST DATES over Valentine's weekend (14FEB04), topping the American box office with $41 million (GBP22.7 million).

The SONY PICTURES movie, which debuted on Friday (13FEB04), has set a record for a romantic comedy opening, says RORY BRUER, the studio's president of domestic theatrical distribution.

The previous record was held by Julia Roberts's Runaway Bride, which bowed with $35 million (GBP19.4 million) in 1999.

The "Dates" debut almost doubled that of the last Sandler Barrymore pairing, "The Wedding Singer," which kicked off with $21.9 million exactly six years ago, and finished up with $89.2 million domestically.

Last weekend's champion BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS slipped to number two with $15.6 million (GBP8.6 million), taking its 10 day total to $44.1 million (GBP24.5 million). Kurt Russell's hockey drama MIRACLE also fell one place to number three with $14 million (GBP7.7 million), for a 10-day tally of $37.1 million (GBP20.6 million).
