The comedienne lost close to 100 pounds (45.3 kilograms) so doctors could perform keyhole surgery following a cancer scare.
French opened up about the health drama as she kicked off her one-woman stage show in Sheffield, England on Thursday (05Jun14), explaining she opted to have her womb removed when her doctor feared she had uterine cancer, and rather than invasive surgery, the star opted for a keyhole procedure.
However, in order to have the operation, she was told she would need to lose weight.
The Vicar of Dibley star told the audience at her first U.K. show, "When I was due to have my hysterectomy the doc told me that if I could lose some weight before the op, they would be able to do it via keyhole, and I would recover in three weeks or so. Otherwise it would be big open surgery, and three months to recover. So, I set about dropping a few stone.
"(There was) no magic wand, just tiny, joyless low-cal (calorie) eating and lots more walking for weeks and weeks. It was grim. I lost seven-and-a-half stone."
