Hulu, the second-most-popular video website, is preparing to offer itself up as a cheap ($10.00 per month) alternative to cable TV as early as this week, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Tuesday), citing people with knowledge of the matter. The service, called Hulu Plus, is expected to broaden the content that Internet users can currently receive free via the site from ABC, Fox and NBC, the site's owners, as well as shows from Viacom's cable networks (MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, etc.) and CBS. Reporting on the expected roll-out -- it will probably be made available at first to an invited few -- the New York Post commented today, "Get ready to kiss your cable bill goodbye -- Hulu Plus is preparing for takeoff." However, the Times observed that the television networks are likely to be circumspect in deciding on the number of shows they will provide, wary of undercutting "the lucrative cable contracts that underwrite the cost of producing expensive content."
