All three American Idol episodes once again dominated the top-ten Nielsen chart among both overall viewers and those 18-49. But every other show on the chart aired on CBS, which won the week among overall viewers with a 6.9 rating and a 12 share, representing an average viewing audience of 7.97 million viewers. Second-place Fox recorded a 5.5/9, averaging 6.32 million viewers, but that figure was down substantially from a year ago when it reported a 6.4/10 with 7.30 million viewers. ABC saw an even steeper decline, dropping to a 4.2/7 for the week, with 4.82 million viewers, compared to last year when during the comparable week, it registered 6.12 million viewers. As usual, NBC trailed with an average 4.0/7 or 4.59 million viewers. However, among the nightly newscasts, NBC continued to hold a strong lead, with NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams claiming an average of 9.14 million viewers. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer claimed second place with 7.9 million viewers, while the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric remained a distant third with 6.14 million viewers.
