After being bested by the Olympics last Wednesday, American Idol roared back with a vengeance last night, rounding up 22.8 million viewers to the Olympics' 19.0 million. Idol peaked in its last half hour with 24.42 million. Surprisingly, NBC's numbers did not significantly improve for the last hour of the Olympics at 10 00 p.m. CBS and ABC aired mostly repeats. On last night's Idol , judges appeared to be particularly harsh on the top 12 male contenders, with Simon Cowell telling one of them that his performance, was "too serious, too indulgent and not original enough."
