Brazilian music star-turned-Culture Minister GILBERTO GIL was honoured with the POLAR MUSIC PRIZE in Sweden last night (23MAY05).

KING CARL GUSTAF bestowed the honour on the 62-year-old at an official ceremony in Stockholm.

The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by former Abba manager STIG ANDERSON to herald notable musicians for their lifetime achievement. Each prizewinner receives $137,000 (GBP72,100).

Last year's (04) prize was shared by blues great Bb King and composer GYOERGY LIGETI.
